SBA Milestones
* Dr Stephen Riady, Chairman of Overseas Union Enterprise Group and President of the Lippo Group of Companies, becomes the new Patron of SBA and donated $1million to SBA at the Appreciation Dinner on 10 Dec 2010.
* Had a successful 74th Annual General Meeting during which a new Management Committee (MC) was formed with new MC members who joined SBA in the last couple of years (in alphabetical order; Mr Chew Kia Seng, Francis Koh, Michael Foo, Michael Chia, Lawrence Leow, Lok Chee How, Philip Lu and Tay Eng Hoe).
* Shinta and Yao Lei not only captured the India Open Grand Prix Gold but also the Women’s Doubles Gold in Li-Ning Singapore Open Super Series before an ecstatic home crowd in June this year.
* In Oct during the Delhi Commonwealth Games, beside Shinta/Yao lei went on to win a Silver medal for Singapore. The semi-finals of MD saw two of our pairs playing against each other. Even though Derek Wong / Chayut Triyachart lost to compatriots Hendra Wijaya / Hendri Saputra, their performance was commendable. Our mixed double pair, Yao lei /Chayut XD narrowly missed out on the final but still won the XD bronze. 1 silver and 2 bronze.
* Recruited former All-England champion Mr Luan Ching as our new Singles Chief Coach in Mar 2010.
* Established a Partners In Excellence (or PEX) programme with seven primary and secondary schools, namely Maris Stella High and Primary, Montfort Secondary and Junior, Boon Lay Secondary, Xin Min Secondary and Singapore Sports School* Set up a Satellite Centre for Youth Sports Development in badminton at North Vista Primary School in July 2010.
*Formed and elected a new committee of Technical Officials on 30 Sep 2010.
Li-Ning Sports Singapore Pte Ltd (Li-Ning) will be sponsoring SBA to the total amount of S$8.8 million in cash and value-in-kind over a 4-year period from 2010 to 2013
- At the Singapore Sports Awards 2008, we achieved the Meritorious (Events) award for our Men’s Team and Mixed Youth Team
- First Gold Medal for Women's Doubles (Fu Mingtian/Yao Lei) in World Junior Championships 2008, held in Pune, India
- At the World Junior Championships 2007, we surpassed our target and achieved 2 Bronze medals for our Mixed Team and Women’s Singles (Gu Juan).
- At the 2006 Thomas/Uber Cup, our Women’s Team reached the final stage of the Uber Cup thereby achieving our 2012 target six years ahead
- At 2006 Commonwealth Games, we achieved:
- Silver medal for Women’s Doubles (Yanmei/Yujia)
- Bronze medal for our Mixed Doubles (Yujia/Hendri)
- At 2006 Asian Games, our women's team won the bronze medal, the first Asian Games medal for badminton
- Ronald Susilo was the 1st badminton player to win the Sportsman of Year 2005 for his stella achievements in 2004
- Kendrick Lee, Li Li and Jiang Yanmei were awarded the Meritorious Awards
- The 1st Coach of the Year award which was introduced by the Singapore Sports Coucil was clinched by our Technical Director, Coach Zheng Qingjin
- SBA was the 1st NSA to embrace Sports Science and developed close working relationship with the Sports Medicine and Sports Science Department of the Singapore Sports Council
- SBA successfully raised S$1.68 million through a fund-raising Golf event to set up our Players’ Development Fund. This fund is for our players and is used to support scholarships, bursary, competition subsidies for young players as well as post playing career of our full time players.
- At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Ronald Susilo beat World No. 1 and top seed Lin Dan (China) to reach the Quarter-final
- In 22nd SEA Games, we achieved our 1st Gold medal for the Women’s Team and 5 Bronze medals through:
- Gold Medal - Women’s Team
- Bronze Medal - Men’s Team
- Bronze Medal - Men’s Singles (Ronald Susilo)
- Bronze Medal - Women’s Singles (Li Li & Jiang Yanmei)
- Bronze Medal - Women’s Doubles (Jiang Yanmei/Xiao Luxi)
- In the 2002 Commonwealth Games, we achieved our 1st Gold Medal and a Silver medal through:
- Gold Medal – Women’s Singles (Li Li)
- Silver Medal – Mixed Team
- SBA hosted the inaugural Konica Cup Singapore International Badminton Championship
- In December, SBA hosted the Seiko World Grand Prix Finals in the new Singapore Indoor Stadium
- The SBA Clubhouse was built at 102 Guillemard Road, next to the Singapore Badminton Hall
- At the 12th SEA Games, we achieved our 1st Gold Medal for Men’s Singles through Wong Shoon Keat
- Hosted the Thomas Cup in the Singapore Badminton Hall a 3rd time
- Hosted the Thomas Cup in the Singapore Badminton Hall the 2nd time
- The Singapore Badminton Hall was built
- Hosted the 1st Thomas Cup in the Singapore Badminton Hall
- The Singapore Badminton Association was founded
